Curious Comfort is a series of photographs inspired by life-altering events I endured since my return to Manila from the US in 2011. My images are representations of these experiences, my loved ones involved, and my physical and emotional states during those trying times. The collection explores the dichotomy of self-preservation and a desire to remain in one’s comfort zone, with the need for exploration, growth, and moving forward - the call of curiosity.
The
series comprises ten images, all created with the underlying belief that
something beautiful can come from an otherwise difficult situation. This idea
is interpreted by the collection's vibrant and dynamic colors contrasting
its fragile and evocative subjects. Each image is printed on leather
fabric, wrapped around foam, and mounted on wood. This style of presentation
explores the idea of comfort by bearing the resemblance of a cozy chair,
mattress, or pillow.
An element featured amongst the pieces is a clear sphere akin to an astronaut's helmet: an object that not only elicits the sense of adventure, wonder, and courage of being in uncharted territory but also simultaneously serves as a form of protection and safety. Also included as components in the images are props that are personal belongings, borrowed from family members, or creations I specially hand-crafted for each photograph.
